Becoming

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Psalm 1:1-6 We are blessed when we do not entertain the company of those who mock God or give unwise counsel. Our friends and those with whom we associate closely ought to bring us closer to God, not hinder us from becoming what God has called us to become. We must be able to often ask ourselves the question: Who are we walking with? Who are we listening to? Who are we surrounding ourselves with? Our delight (our pleasure) must be in God’s law and doing His will and we must meditate on His Word both day and night – continuously. The more we learn and study God’s Word the more resources we will have at our disposal to help us make sound, wise, and most of all Biblical decisions. A tree soaks up water and produces great fruit – we, too, should be like a soaking tree – soaking up the Word of God at every opportunity and producing great fruit for the Kingdom. We need to understand that we are not, however, exempt from failure or difficulty, but God’s Word will produce in us what it is meant to produce if we allow it to take root in our lives. The chaff in verse 4 represents a life that is not grounded in the Word – it is blown away easily and doesn’t amount to anything worthwhile. Good grain, however, is that which falls to the ground is a symbol of a faithful life that can be used by God. We must choose which path we will take. Are we easily led astray or apt to be blown away by the things and people in our lives or are we grounded and steadfast – firmly rooted in God’s Word? Although it appears that the ungodly prospers, there shall come a day when they won’t be able to stand – God promises judgment. Therefore, the child of God need not worry about situations in which others seem to prosper unfairly. We have a God who is looking out for us and has promised to make our enemies our footstool. The Lord has promised to prepare a table for us in the presence of our enemies. It is not that we look to Him for revenge, but rather we understand that He will recognize our suffering and our oppression at the hand of others – He will take care of us! He sees and knows the way of the righteous and He will reward His people and deliver them out of affliction, circumstances, and pain. We must continue to trust and obey and give Him full reign in our lives. Continue on your road of Becoming – Becoming all that God has preordained you to become. And as you are on the road to becoming – continue to praise Him and honor Him as He causes all things to come together to work on your behalf.
