Psalm 119:1-7 Part 1 1 BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, to be envied) are the undefiled (the upright, truly sincere, and blameless) in the way , who walk (order their conduct and conversation) in the law of the Lord (the whole of God's revealed will). 2 Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are they who keep His testimonies, and who seek, inquire for and of Him and crave Him with the whole heart. 3 Yes, they do no unrighteousness ; they walk in His ways. 4 You have commanded us to keep Your precepts, that we should observe them diligently. 5 Oh, that my ways were directed and established to observe Your statutes ! 6 Then shall I not be put to shame when I have respect to all Your commandments. 7 I will praise and give thanks to You with uprightness of heart when I learn Your righteous judgments . Step #1: Understand that you are Blessed (v.1) 1BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, to be envied) are the undefiled (the upright, truly sincere, and blameless) in the way , who walk (order their conduct and conversation) in the law of the Lord (the whole of God's revealed will). We must first understand that blessings are not rewards – they are gifts given to us by God. We often think that because we do such and such – we are blessed. No, blessings are gifts bestowed to us by a loving Father. They are not measures of who we are –but of who God is! Genesis 12:2, 3 2And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing . 3And I will bless those who bless you and curse him who curses or uses insolent language toward you; in you will all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed . We are blessed by God and we ought to be a blessing to others. God’s goodness is apparent when His children are blessed. There are so many promises and blessings for God’s people. He said that He would never leave us nor forsake us – David said that he had never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread, God said that when the enemy came in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord would raise up a standard against Him – There is nothing in our lives too hard for God – he doesn’t wake up surprised at anything that happens to us – we are in His hands and no one can pluck us out so we need to understand that we are BLESSED!!!! Happy – Although this is a great word – I prefer Joy – because you can have joy when everything around you is going wrong! Happiness is temporal – but joy runs deep in your soul – it is not predicated on your circumstances or other outside influences. Fortunate – God chose you out of millions of others to be set apart for service – sanctified for his use – a vessel of honor fit for the Master’s use – this privilege won’t be given to everyone – you are fortunate to be a child of the King – so walk like one! To be envied – Don’t you know that when you walk around as a confident Christian, who is not easily swayed but has learned to depend on Christ that you will be envied? Now, it's not a boastful attitude you should have – but you should be like the salt of the earth –causing a thirst in someone else who doesn’t know him – they should want to get what you got! But they won’t want it if you make it non-appealing! 1 BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, to be envied) are the undefiled (the upright, truly sincere, and blameless) in the way , who walk (order their conduct and conversation) in the law of the Lord (the whole of God's revealed will). Who order their conduct and conversation in the whole of God’s revealed will. Your conduct – the way you behave – and your conversation – must line up with God’s revealed will. What does God’s will mean? It means finding out what God wants you to do. We know that we have our own will – what we desire, what we want – but what is God’s will for us – He has a will that He wants for all of us collectively and then He has a will that He wants for us individually. What are some of the things that God wants for us collectively? What does He want from some of us individually? So the Christian must ask for God’s wisdom and will in every aspect of life. The Bible teaches us that realizing or proving God’s will is the result of habitually conforming your thinking and behavior to God’s Word over your lifetime. When you read the Bible daily your mind is being renewed and the result is a new way of thinking. This process takes time but there are no shortcuts!
