Today Facebook shut down for a brief moment. Like most users, I thought it was something wrong with my browser. I reloaded the page, only to get the error, “This page is not available.” Thinking it was a mistake, I opened another browser and got the same error. But there is something deep inside the psyche of a regular social media addict that just won’t believe the errors even though you see them with your very own eyes! So, I went to my phone and tried to access Facebook, only to see “network error.” Hmmmm…. Now what? Well, you do what any self-respecting social media aficionado does you go to Twitter! So I went to Twitter plugged in #facebook and found out that Facebook was down! WHEW! How much time did that just take? So it made me wonder, what would we do if social media just disappeared forever? Here’s a few things that top my list, perhaps you have a few of your own: 1. We would never know when anyone’s birthday is again! Don’t you just love the fact that you don’t have to remember anyone’s birthday? Back in the day I carried around an address book (remember those?) that had a section in the back to remind me of people’s birthdays and anniversaries. Thank goodness for Facebook – we never have to do that again! 2. We would now have to keep up with loved ones and friends by actually calling them! Remember how a quick phone call became an hour-long event? Social media makes it possible to just type a post or inbox message, preventing you from listening to the “blah, blah, blah” that often kept you from watching your favorite show or caused you to burn your dinner because you couldn’t get Aunt Bettie off the phone! Now Aunt Bettie is even online and if necessary you could talk to her with only 140 characters! 3. We’d actually have to engage in small talk at the dinner table when going out to eat Go to any restaurant on any given day at any given time and you’re bound to find people at the table with their phones in their faces. We’re all guilty of it, right? Take away social media and we’ll actually have full contact with one another, uninterrupted for at least an hour. 4. We wouldn’t know who took the #ALSicebucket challenge!! How could we possibly know and actually see for ourselves all of the people that took the ALS ice bucket challenge or the people that complained about how much water was being wasted, or how ridiculous it was, or the people that didn’t really know why they were doing it but did it anyway! How could we possibly know this without social media? Ijs 5. We wouldn’t be able to complain about not having enough time in our day! Many of us spend a lot of time on social media and it has become second nature to us – but we still complain about not having enough time to do things, i.e. read a book, take up a hobby, spend more time with loved ones, follow our dreams. Take social media away…..we just might not be able to complain about that anymore! Hmmm… As you can see, my list might be a little facetious, but it’s something worth thinking about. Feel free to leave your list, if you choose…. I’m going to get this post ready for social media, while it’s still there!
