Kidnapped across state lines?

So... listennnn. I thought we were going to celebrate my 16-year-old nephew Christian’s high school graduation and my brother Larry’s 42nd birthday somewhere in Texas.. Cute, right?
Turns out… after the graduation, we (eight of us) ended up in a cabin in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. I didn’t even realize we left the state until I saw the “Welcome to Oklahoma” sign. The cabin, deep in the woods, was BEAUTIFUL — the kind you see in movies where people either find healing… or get chased by Jason (hopefully, you know the reference! lol)
Now, ziplining was on the itinerary, but as a Philly girl raised on cheesesteaks and concrete, I politely declined. Heights? Absolutely not. My family tried to convince me to face my fears, but Jesus didn’t bring me this far to dangle me from a wire.
But then came the kayaking.
Beavers Bend State Park was stunning — and deceptively peaceful. Somehow, I ended up in a kayak with the birthday boy himself, Larry. I’d like to say I was gliding across the water like a majestic swan. But really? It was more like a stressed-out duck with commitment issues.
It didn't take long before Larry said, “Don't paddle at all!” Sir, I’m TRYING. (haha) Apparently, I was working against the current AND my partner. The whole experience was equal parts hilarious and humbling.
In short: I tried it. I survived it. And there is a 98% chance that I will not do it again.
But the memories? Priceless.
Laughter, family, fresh air (and slight terror) — all worth it. I’ll absolutely say yes to family, celebrations, and memories that make you snort-laugh later.
Next time though… I’m staying on the shore with snacks.
Until the next adventure (preferably on land),
