(a personal devotional) Psalm 119: 57, 59-64 57You are my portion, O LORD; I have said that I would keep Your words. 59 I thought about my ways, And turned my feet to Your testimonies. 60 I made haste, and did not delay To keep Your commandments. 61 The cords of the wicked have bound me, But I have not forgotten Your law. 62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, Because of Your righteous judgments. 63 I am a companion of all who fear You, And of those who keep Your precepts. 64 The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; Teach me Your statutes. v. 57 What does it mean for God to be my portion? my inheritance my necessity my substance my sustenance my everything all that I need v. 59 – I thought about my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies – my ways are wicked, deceitful, and unrighteous so I have to turn my feet (in order to walk in a different direction) to your testimonies. You, Lord, are the opposite of me -you are just, righteous, pure and holy! v.60 -I made haste and did not delay to keep your commandments – I had to hurriedly keep your commandments – there is a sense of urgency to obey because I know that my way is instinctively wicked and in opposition to Your way. I realize that if I upheld my way it would mess me up so I quickly, hurriedly, and without delay – seek to keep your commandments. You are holy and I am ONLY holy because of YOU. v.61- I’m so wrapped up by the strongholds, the binds, the cords of the wicked sometimes! It seems that the enemy is bringing me down, is binding me up…BUT I have forgotten your law; your law is just, it is appropriate, it will conquer and give exact justice. v.62 – Even in my darkest hour, even when it feels I am defeated – even when the chains get tighter on my life and I can’t see my way out – I will rise! I will hold up my head and give You thanks (praise, adoration, homage) because of Your righteous judgments. You are the King, conqueror, and judge – You WILL have the last say! v.63 – I just want to be in the presence of those who fear you – I want to be a companion, friend, confidant, and supporter of those that fear You. I have to watch the company I keep – to be in the presence of that that keep your precepts – those whose main objective is to serve you, to honor You, to worship and obey You! v. 64 – Your mercy and compassion are seen every day as I look around and know that the reason why the world is not in total chaos is because of Your mercy! The presence of the Holy Spirit tells me that You have chosen mercy over judgment! Please teach me Your statutes so that I can remain in Your way! You are, indeed, my Portion!
